Wielangta to Rheban [South-East Tasmania]

As soon as the bulbs started popping up this spring, our boys (both 6 years old) were chomping at the bit to head to Wielangta, an abandoned (almost completely disappeared) mining town in south-east Tasmania. We knew if we timed our trip right, we’d be able to see where people used to live, because of the heritage bulbs popping up in the bush.

Our boys regularly bring home “Postcards from the town that disappeared” by Cilia Lendis from the library. An unusual choice. Sometimes they’d both bring home a copy each! I could almost recite all the words. It’s about a boy who rode his pony, Jo from Nugent to Wielangta to deliver the mail to the families living in the forestry town. Our boys were captivated by the story, the history area, the forest, the characters and the train that carted the sawn timber to the port at Rheben on the coast.

So off we went. Have lamingtons… will travel…
